Diablo 4 Crashing on PC: How to Fix It (Blizzard's Steps)

On this page

Most Diablo 4 crashes on PC are fixed by Blizzard’s own five-step checklist: confirm your PC meets the minimum requirements, run Scan and Repair in the Battle.net app, update your GPU driver and Windows, close background programs, and reinstall only as a last resort. If you see a specific error message, search Blizzard Support for it first. Blizzard says some errors have their own articles.

Diablo 4 Crashing on PC: How to Fix It (Blizzard's Steps)

Crash vs. stutter: if the game stays open but hitches or drops frames, that’s a performance problem. Use the Diablo 4 stuttering fix instead.

Fix 1 — Diablo 4 doesn’t launch after clicking Play

Blizzard’s article for this symptom covers three cases: the game window never shows, the Play button goes grey then blue, or Play stopped working after today’s patch.

  1. Restart your PC and launch Diablo IV before you open anything else. Blizzard says this is often a software conflict.
  2. Check your security software. Blizzard notes that a small number of security programs wrongly block its games after patches. Update the security program first. If that doesn’t fix it, add the Battle.net app and Diablo IV to its exception list, or turn it off temporarily until the vendor fixes it. Blizzard suggests running a different program, such as Microsoft Defender, in the meantime. VPNs and third-party firewalls count as security software here too.
  3. If it still won’t open, work through the rest of this guide in order.

Fix 2 — Run Scan and Repair (or Verify on Steam)

Damaged or half-patched files are the most common cause of crashes right after an update. Blizzard says to check for updates first, then repair:

  1. Open the Battle.net desktop app and click Diablo IV.
  2. Click the cogwheel next to Play → Check for Updates.
  3. If the game is up to date and still crashes: cogwheel → Scan and Repair → Begin Scan, and let it finish.

Steam version: right-click Diablo IV in your Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.

This is the fix Blizzard gives for “Diablo IV Unable to Open Critical File” after a patch: update drivers and Windows, repair the game, and reinstall if that fails.

Fix 3 — Check the minimum requirements

Blizzard’s crash checklist starts here, because running below the minimum often causes instability. Diablo IV’s official minimum on Windows:

PartMinimum (1080p output, 720p render, Low, 30 fps)
OSWindows 10 64-bit, version 1909 or newer
CPUIntel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-8350
GPUNVIDIA GTX 660, AMD Radeon R9 280 or Intel Arc A380
RAM8 GB
StorageSSD with 90 GB free
APIDirectX 12

Blizzard’s Medium (recommended, 1080p/60) tier asks for 16 GB RAM and a GTX 970, RX 470 or Arc A380. Blizzard says the game will try to run below the minimum, including on hard drives, dual-core CPUs and integrated GPUs, but the experience may be significantly worse. On an 8 GB system, closing everything else matters more (Fix 5).

Fix 4 — Update your GPU driver and Windows

Blizzard lists outdated drivers and Windows as a crash cause in its crash checklist, the critical-file article and the blue-screen article.

Fix 5 — Close background programs (startup clean boot)

Blizzard’s own method for ruling out third-party programs on Windows 10/11:

  1. Close unnecessary programs and restart.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager → More details (if shown) → Startup tab (Windows 11: Startup apps).
  3. Right-click each item → Disable, then restart the PC.
  4. If the crashes stop, re-enable the startup items one at a time, restarting after each, until the crash returns. The last one you enabled is the cause.

Overlays, RGB and fan utilities, hardware monitors and capture tools are worth testing first. Blizzard doesn’t name any specific program, so treat this as elimination, not a known-bad list.

Fix 6 — Reset Diablo 4’s in-game options

Blizzard says some game settings don’t work with your graphics card or monitor, which can cause crashes or poor performance. This is common after changing GPUs or monitors.

  1. In the Battle.net app, click the cogwheel next to Play → Game Settings.
  2. Find Diablo IV → Reset In-Game Options → Reset → Done.
  3. Relaunch. If it’s stable, raise settings back a few at a time. Best Diablo 4 settings for FPS has a stable starting point.

Fix 7 — Reinstall (last resort)

If none of the above works, Blizzard’s last step is to uninstall and reinstall Diablo IV. Install it on an SSD with at least 90 GB free, as the requirements specify.

Whole PC restarts or blue-screens

If the whole computer restarts, shuts down or shows a blue screen while you play, Blizzard says the game didn’t cause it, and its support team doesn’t handle these cases. Its checklist for blue screens and restarts:

  • Overheating. Blizzard calls it the most common cause of restarts and shutdowns during gameplay. Check CPU and GPU temperatures under load and clean the dust filters.
  • Overclocks, including factory overclocks on GPUs. Run at stock to test. An unstable RAM profile counts too: if crashes started after you turned on XMP or EXPO, test with it off.
  • RAM. Badly seated or failing memory causes system crashes. Reseat it and run a memory test.
  • Windows files. Run System File Checker (sfc /scannow in an admin terminal). See fixing DLL errors with DISM and SFC.
  • Drivers, malware and security software. Update drivers, run a malware scan, and check that security software isn’t blocking driver or hardware access.

If none of these finds the cause, Blizzard says to contact your PC manufacturer or a local technician.

Still crashing? Grab the log

Diablo IV writes a log every time it runs, and Blizzard asks for it when you report a crash:

  1. In Battle.net, select Diablo IV → cogwheel → Show in Explorer.
  2. Open the Diablo IV folder and find FenrisDebug.txt. That’s the latest run. _FenrisDebug-1 and higher are older runs.
  3. Copy it right after a crash, because the next launch overwrites it. Attach it to a Blizzard bug report or a post on Blizzard’s technical support forum.

Known-issue crashes. After big seasonal patches, Blizzard sometimes posts a short article saying it’s investigating a crash and has no workaround. That happened with “Diablo IV crashing at launch after Season 12 update”. When that article exists, local fixes won’t help. Repair the game once, send a bug report and wait for the hotfix.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Diablo 4 keep crashing on my PC?

Blizzard's Diablo IV troubleshooting article lists the usual causes: a PC below the minimum system requirements, damaged game files, outdated graphics drivers or Windows, and background programs interfering with the game. Work through them in that order: check the requirements, run Scan and Repair in the Battle.net app, update drivers and Windows, then close background programs. Reinstall only if none of that works.

What should I do if Diablo 4 doesn't launch after I click Play?

If the Play button goes grey and then blue again but no game window appears, Blizzard says to restart your PC and launch Diablo IV before opening any other program, because this is often a software conflict. Blizzard also notes that a small number of security programs wrongly block the game after a patch. Add Battle.net and Diablo IV to your antivirus exception list, or update the security program.

How do I fix 'Unable to Open Critical File' in Diablo 4?

Blizzard's article for 'Unable to Open Critical File' after a patch gives three steps: update your graphics drivers and Windows, run Scan and Repair on Diablo IV in the Battle.net app, and if that fails, uninstall and reinstall the game. On the Steam version, use Verify integrity of game files instead of Scan and Repair.

Where are Diablo 4 crash logs saved?

Diablo IV writes a log called FenrisDebug.txt in its install folder. In the Battle.net app, select Diablo IV, click the cogwheel next to Play and choose Show in Explorer. FenrisDebug.txt is the latest log, and files named _FenrisDebug-1 and higher are older runs. A new log is created every time the game runs, so copy it right after a crash.

My PC restarts or blue-screens while playing Diablo 4. Is that the game?

Blizzard says a full PC restart, shutdown or blue screen during a Blizzard game isn't caused by the game. It points to overheating (the most common cause of restarts), drivers, security software, corrupted Windows files, overclocks including factory overclocks, and failing or loose RAM. Check temperatures, remove overclocks and test your memory before blaming Diablo 4.
