GTA 5 Crashing on PC: Fix Enhanced and Legacy Crashes

On this page

GTA 5 crashing on PC almost always comes from one of five things: a graphics driver problem, mods or graphics tools (ScriptHookV, ASI loaders, ReShade, Special K), a corrupted settings.xml, damaged game files, or an unstable overclock — and GTA 5 Enhanced adds a sixth, because it only runs on DirectX 12 GPUs. Match the error code or symptom in the table, then work only that section. This guide covers both GTA 5 Enhanced (the 2025 DirectX 12 version) and GTA 5 Legacy (the original PC version).

Enhanced or Legacy — know which one you’re running

Since March 2025, GTA 5 on PC has shipped as two separate games, and they crash for different reasons.

GTA 5 EnhancedGTA 5 Legacy
Graphics APIDirectX 12 onlyDirectX 10, 10.1 or 11
Minimum GPUGTX 1630 4 GB / RX 6400 4 GBMuch older GPUs
Ray tracing, DLSS/FSRYesNo
Settings folderDocuments\Rockstar Games\GTAV EnhancedDocuments\Rockstar Games\GTA V
Typical crash causesNo DX12 support, drivers, ray tracing on weak GPUs, modsOld mods, DirectX version, drivers

The Enhanced minimum spec is Windows 10, an Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590, 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 1630 or RX 6400 with 4 GB of VRAM. If your PC is below that, Enhanced crashing is expected — play Legacy, which is still available alongside it.

Fix 1 — ERR_GFX_D3D_NOD3D12: Enhanced needs DirectX 12

ERR_GFX_D3D_NOD3D12 reads “No DirectX 12 adapter or runtime found. Please install latest DirectX runtime or install a compatible DirectX 12 video card.” GTA 5 Enhanced cannot fall back to DirectX 11.

  1. Update Windows through Windows Update — DirectX 12 ships with Windows, not as a separate download.
  2. Update your GPU driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. An old or Microsoft-supplied basic display driver can hide DirectX 12 support.
  3. On a laptop, force the dedicated GPU. Go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the game’s executable, and set it to High performance. If the game starts on the integrated GPU, it may not find a DirectX 12 adapter it can use.
  4. Check the card. If your GPU is older than the minimum spec or doesn’t support DirectX 12, Enhanced won’t run on it. Play GTA 5 Legacy instead.

Avoid “force DirectX 11” DLL files posted online for Enhanced: they are unofficial, can break with any update, and replacing game files is exactly what anti-cheat flags in GTA Online.

Fix 2 — ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT and ERR_GFX_STATE

ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT (“Failed initialization. Please reboot and restart game. Try reinstalling the game if this persists”) means the game couldn’t start its renderer. ERR_GFX_STATE is a graphics failure mid-game. Both have the same short list of causes.

  1. Clean-install your graphics driver. A partial or corrupted driver install is the most common cause. Use DDU to clean-install your GPU driver; if a brand-new driver started the crashes, install the previous version.
  2. Close overlays and injectors — Discord, Steam, NVIDIA App, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, recording tools and RGB software. Anything that hooks into the game’s renderer can break initialization.
  3. Remove GPU overclocks and undervolts. Reset MSI Afterburner or AMD Adrenalin tuning to default. ERR_GFX_STATE is a classic symptom of a GPU that is stable in benchmarks but not in GTA.
  4. Reset settings.xml (Fix 4) so the game starts on default settings.
  5. Lower the heavy settings if crashes happen in game: Texture Quality, Shadow Quality, Extended Distance Scaling and, in Enhanced, ray tracing. Settings that exceed your VRAM crash rather than slow down.
  6. Legacy only: in Settings → Graphics, switch DirectX Version to DirectX 11 (or try 10.1 to test). Enhanced is always DirectX 12.

The generic Windows-level versions of these errors are covered in DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG and DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED.

Fix 3 — Remove mods and graphics tools

Rockstar treats third-party mods and graphics tools as unsupported, and they are the top cause of crashes after every game update. Mods built for the previous version break the moment Rockstar patches the game.

Look in the game’s install folder for:

  • ScriptHookV (ScriptHookV.dll) and the scripts folder
  • ASI loaders (dinput8.dll and .asi files)
  • ReShade (dxgi.dll, d3d12.dll or similar, plus reshade-shaders)
  • Special K and any other custom graphics DLL
  • OpenIV mod folders (mods)

Move them to a backup folder, then verify the game files (Fix 5). Only add mods back once their authors have updated them for the current game version. Note that BattlEye in GTA Online disables ReShade and Special K, and Rockstar’s own support advice for BattlEye problems is to remove graphics mods.

Fix 4 — Reset settings.xml

A setting your PC can’t handle — or a settings.xml left over from a different GPU — can crash the game before you ever reach the menu.

  1. Close the game and the launcher.
  2. Open the settings folder:
    • Enhanced: Documents\Rockstar Games\GTAV Enhanced
    • Legacy: Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V
  3. Rename settings.xml to settings.old.xml (or delete it).
  4. Launch the game. It rebuilds the file with default settings.

This doesn’t touch your saves. If the game now launches, raise settings a few at a time to find the one that crashes it.

Fix 5 — Verify the game files

Damaged or partly updated files cause crashes on launch, on loading screens and after patches.

  • Rockstar Games Launcher: Settings → My installed games → Grand Theft Auto V → Verify Integrity
  • Steam: right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files
  • Epic Games Launcher: Library → ⋯ → Manage → Verify

Make sure you verify the right version — Enhanced and Legacy are separate entries on Steam and Epic. If the game sits on a drive with errors, move it to an SSD with free space; GTA 5 Enhanced needs about 105 GB.

Fix 6 — Remove overclocks and check stability

If GTA 5 crashes under load and other games do too, suspect the hardware tuning rather than the game.

  • Reset GPU and CPU overclocks and undervolts to stock, and turn off XMP/EXPO briefly to test memory stability.
  • Intel 13th/14th-gen CPUs: update your motherboard BIOS to the latest version, which includes Intel’s microcode fix for the instability that caused game crashes on those chips. The out of video memory error fix explains why this shows up as crashes in demanding games.
  • Raise the Windows pagefile to system-managed if you’ve turned it off or set it small — GTA 5 can crash when Windows runs out of committed memory.
  • Watch temperatures. A GPU or CPU that overheats crashes in long sessions, not on launch.

The Windows-level crash code 0xC0000005 (access violation) has its own guide: 0xc0000005 access violation crash fix.

Frequently asked questions

Why does GTA 5 keep crashing on PC?

GTA 5 crashes on PC most often come from an outdated or broken graphics driver, mods or graphics tools such as ScriptHookV, ASI loaders, ReShade or Special K, a corrupted settings.xml file, damaged game files, or an unstable GPU or CPU overclock. GTA 5 Enhanced also needs a DirectX 12 GPU, so older cards that ran Legacy can't run Enhanced at all. Match the error code you see to the fix, then verify game files.

What is ERR_GFX_D3D_NOD3D12 in GTA 5 Enhanced?

ERR_GFX_D3D_NOD3D12 means GTA 5 Enhanced could not find a DirectX 12 adapter or runtime. Enhanced runs only on DirectX 12, with a minimum of a GTX 1630 or RX 6400 class GPU. Update Windows and your GPU driver and make sure the game is using your dedicated GPU; if the card doesn't support DirectX 12, play GTA 5 Legacy instead, which also runs on DirectX 10 and 11.

How do I fix ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT in GTA 5?

ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT ('Failed initialization. Please reboot and restart game') means the game couldn't start its Direct3D renderer. Clean-install your graphics driver, close overlays, remove any GPU overclock, delete settings.xml so the game rebuilds default graphics settings, and in GTA 5 Legacy try switching the DirectX Version to DirectX 11. Then verify the game files.

Where is the GTA 5 settings.xml file?

For GTA 5 Enhanced, settings.xml is in Documents\Rockstar Games\GTAV Enhanced. For GTA 5 Legacy, it is in Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V. Deleting or renaming it resets the graphics settings to defaults on the next launch, which fixes crashes caused by a setting your PC can't handle; your save files are not affected.

Can mods make GTA 5 crash?

Yes. Rockstar treats ScriptHookV, ASI loaders, ReShade, Special K and custom graphics DLLs as unsupported, and they are a top cause of crashes after every game update, because mods built for the previous version break. Remove them from the game folder, verify the game files, and only add mods back once they have been updated. GTA Online's BattlEye anti-cheat also disables graphics tools like ReShade.
