RuneScape: Dragonwilds Stuttering Fix — Stop Lag and FPS Drops

On this page

Most RuneScape: Dragonwilds stutter comes from three separate causes — UE5 shader compilation during first-time effects, a demanding early-access build using Lumen and Nanite, and CPU object load from large bases — and each one has a different fix. The single biggest lever is the quality preset: Medium runs roughly 44% faster than Epic and Low about 69% faster. This guide sorts which stutter you actually have and fixes it.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds Stuttering Fix

The first dragon fight of a session is usually the worst — that’s shader compilation, not your hardware.

First: work out which stutter you have

These feel similar and have completely different fixes.

Fix 1 — Drop the quality preset (biggest single win)

Dragonwilds is built on Unreal Engine 5 and uses the full stack: Lumen global illumination, Nanite geometry and Virtual Shadows. All three are expensive, and in the current early-access build a single quality preset drives lighting, shadows, foliage, textures and effects together.

That makes the preset unusually powerful compared to most games:

  • Medium ≈ 44% faster than Epic
  • Low ≈ 69% faster than Epic

Start at Medium. On mid-range hardware that alone often converts an unstable 40s into a stable 60. Note that the early-access menu has been changing between patches — if your build exposes more individual options than the preset, use them, but the preset remains the dominant lever.

Fix 2 — Turn on upscaling (and frame generation if you have it)

Upscaling is close to free performance here and also cuts VRAM pressure.

Your GPUUse
NVIDIA RTX 40 seriesUpscaling + DLSS Frame Generation
Any other systemUpscaling + AMD FSR Frame Generation (auto-selected)
Older / weaker GPUsFSR (Fast) or NIS (Fastest) modes

A detail worth knowing: the sharpness slider (10–100, default 10) only becomes available when Upscaling Mode is set to FSR (Fast) or NIS (Fastest). If sharpness is greyed out, that’s why.

Frame generation smooths the number on screen but adds input latency, so use it to go from good to better — not to rescue a game already running below 60.

Fix 3 — Cap your frame rate

An uncapped frame rate makes frame timing worse, which is what stutter actually is. Cap a few frames below your monitor’s refresh rate so the game delivers frames on a consistent cadence. This is one of the most reliable anti-stutter fixes in any UE5 title and costs you nothing visually.

Fix 4 — Fix base lag separately

If your frame rate is fine out exploring and collapses in your own base, that is not a graphics problem and no preset will fix it. Every placed object is something the CPU has to track and submit each frame. Build smaller and denser, cut decorative clutter and dynamic light sources, and lower building draw distance if your build exposes it.

The full mechanism and fix list is in why base building tanks FPS in survival games — it applies to Dragonwilds exactly as it does to Valheim and Palworld.

Fix 5 — Shader cache and drivers

UE5 compiles shaders on demand, so the first encounter with a new effect can freeze briefly. That is expected and settles as you play. What isn’t expected is stutter that appeared right after a driver update — that usually means a stale or corrupt shader cache. See how to clear shader cache to fix stuttering for the exact folder paths.

Keep GPU drivers current; early-access games benefit disproportionately from driver updates because vendors add game-specific optimizations as the build changes.

Fix 6 — The Windows layer

Worth doing once, and it helps every game:

  • Enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling — commonly recommended for Dragonwilds specifically. See HAGS on or off? for when it helps and the rare cases where it hurts.
  • Set the Windows power plan to High Performance so the CPU isn’t downclocking mid-fight.
  • Close overlays and background capture — Discord, Steam and browser tabs all take memory and CPU that a UE5 early-access game would rather have.
  • If micro-stutter persists everywhere, check how to fix high DPC latency, and see best tools to fix stuttering in games for which utilities are genuinely useful.

An honest note on early access

Some of this is the build, not your PC. Dragonwilds shipped into early access with incomplete optimization and a deliberately minimal options menu, and Jagex has been changing both across patches. The fixes above are real and will recover meaningful performance — but if you are chasing the last 10% on an early-access UE5 title, some of it simply isn’t available yet.

The short version

  • Medium preset ≈ 44% faster than Epic; Low ≈ 69%. Start there.
  • Enable upscaling; RTX 40 gets DLSS FG, everything else gets FSR FG.
  • Cap your frame rate for even frame timing.
  • Base lag is a separate, CPU-bound problem — fix it with object count, not graphics.
  • VRAM runs to ~11 GB at 4K Epic, ~9 GB with upscaling, 8–8.5 GB at 1440p/1080p.

Frequently asked questions

Why is RuneScape: Dragonwilds stuttering so much?

Three separate causes overlap. It is an early-access Unreal Engine 5 game using Lumen, Nanite and Virtual Shadows, so it is genuinely demanding and still being optimized. On top of that, UE5 compiles shaders as you encounter new effects, which causes brief freezes during first-time dragon fights, and large player bases add CPU object load that drags frame rate down independently of your graphics card.

How do I fix FPS drops during dragon fights in Dragonwilds?

Dragon fights combine heavy effects with shader compilation the first time you see them, so the first fight of a session is usually the worst. Drop the quality preset one step (Medium runs roughly 44% faster than Epic), enable upscaling, and cap your frame rate so frame timing stays even. If the stutter only happens the first time and is smooth afterwards, it was shader compilation and it will settle.

Does lowering the graphics preset actually help in Dragonwilds?

Yes, substantially — it is the single biggest lever the game gives you. Medium runs about 44% faster than Epic and Low about 69% faster, because the preset drives lighting, shadows, foliage, textures and effects together rather than one at a time. On an early-access build with a minimal options menu, the preset plus upscaling is most of your tuning surface.

How much VRAM does RuneScape: Dragonwilds use?

Up to about 11 GB at 4K on the Epic preset. Enabling upscaling brings that down to roughly 9 GB, and 1440p and 1080p sit between 8 and 8.5 GB. On an 8 GB card you should run upscaling and a lower preset, since sitting right at the VRAM limit causes texture pop-in and hitching that looks like stutter but is actually memory pressure.

Is Dragonwilds stuttering because it's in early access?

Partly, yes — and that is an honest answer rather than an excuse. Early-access builds ship with incomplete optimization and a minimal settings menu, and Jagex has been changing both across patches. Some of the stutter is genuinely fixable on your end with presets, upscaling and a frame cap, but some of it is the build, and it improves as the game updates.
