Roblox Crashing on PC: Fix Every Crash Message

On this page

Roblox crashing on PC is usually caused by another program interfering with the client, and Roblox’s own fix is a Windows clean boot; graphics crashes are the second cause and are fixed by updating your GPU driver. Roblox shows a specific message for each type of crash, so match the message you see to the fix below instead of reinstalling first. Every fix here comes from Roblox Support’s own troubleshooting articles.

Roblox lists the first eight rows on its Anti-cheat Messages page. Apart from the modified-client warning, they aren’t account actions: they tell you something on the PC stopped Roblox from running.

Fix 1 — Incompatible software, third-party software and “Roblox was stopped”

These three Roblox crash messages all mean another program is interfering with Roblox, and Roblox’s recommended fix for all three is a Windows clean boot. If the message shows a file path, the program at that path is the cause — close it first and try again before doing the full clean boot.

Common culprits are overlays, macro and RGB utilities, FPS unlockers, screen recorders and anything that injects into games. If the path points to a cheat, an injector or a modified Roblox client, uninstall it.

To clean boot Windows the way Roblox describes:

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab and tick Hide all Microsoft services.
  3. Click Disable all.
  4. Open the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
  5. Disable every startup item.
  6. Close Task Manager and System Configuration, then restart.

Launch Roblox. If it stops crashing, turn services and startup apps back on a few at a time until the crash returns — the last one you enabled is the conflict. Remember to undo the clean boot when you’re done, or apps like your GPU control panel won’t start with Windows.

Fix 2 — “Critical system files are corrupt” (Windows debug mode)

“Critical system files are corrupt. Roblox cannot run. Please repair or reset your Windows installation.” appears when Windows is running in debug mode — Roblox won’t run in debug mode, and turning it off fixes the crash without repairing Windows.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig and press Enter.
  2. Open the Boot tab and click Advanced options.
  3. Untick Debug.
  4. Click OK, then Apply and OK.
  5. Restart the PC.

Roblox calls this crash type “boot integrity compromised”. Try the debug-mode fix before you reset Windows.

Fix 3 — The OBS in-game capture crash

OBS’s Game Capture source is known to have issues with Roblox, so record or stream Roblox with Display Capture instead.

  1. In OBS, click + under Sources.
  2. Choose Display Capture and pick the monitor Roblox runs on.
  3. Remove or disable any Game Capture source that targets Roblox.

Display Capture records the whole screen, so it never hooks into the Roblox process. For encoder and bitrate settings that don’t cost you frames, see the best OBS settings for streaming while gaming.

Fix 4 — “Roblox has timed out”

“Roblox has timed out. Please restart your client.” means the Roblox app needs a restart. Close Roblox completely (end any leftover Roblox process in Task Manager), then open it again. If the timeout keeps coming back during normal play, contact Roblox Support with the message.

Fix 5 — Virtual machine and modified-client messages

Roblox doesn’t run in a virtual machine unless the VM has GPU passthrough, and it blocks modified versions of the Roblox client.

  • “Roblox cannot run inside of a virtual machine” — play on the host PC. If you must use a VM, it needs GPU passthrough: virtualization extensions (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) turned on in the BIOS and the GPU passed through in your VM software.
  • Modified version of Roblox detected — delete the modified client, reinstall the official version from roblox.com, and close other apps while you play. If the warning comes back, start Windows in Safe Mode: if Roblox runs fine there, a background app is modifying it and needs uninstalling. Roblox may suspend or ban accounts that keep using modified clients.

Fix 6 — Graphics crashes and “Graphics failed to initialize”

Roblox graphics crashes are caused by an outdated GPU driver, a GPU without DirectX 10 support, changed Roblox graphics settings or compatibility mode. Try these in order:

  1. Update your GPU driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. If a normal update doesn’t help, do a clean driver install with DDU.
  2. Check your DirectX feature level. Press Windows + R, run dxdiag, open the Display tab and read Feature Levels. Roblox needs 10 or higher. A GPU without it can’t run Roblox.
  3. Turn off compatibility mode. Right-click the Roblox shortcut → Properties → Compatibility and untick Run this program in compatibility mode. Roblox notes this can trigger a “graphics are out of date” error on PCs that meet the requirements.
  4. Reset Roblox graphics settings (only if Roblox opens at all). Roblox’s method uses Roblox Studio: File → Settings → Reset All Settings.
  5. Check which GPU Roblox is using. In Roblox Studio’s settings, Diagnostics shows a GfxCard line. On a laptop with two GPUs, this tells you whether Roblox is using the dedicated one.

If Roblox opens but crashes in heavy experiences, lower Graphics Quality in the Roblox menu. Our best Roblox settings for FPS cover the values that keep frame times stable.

Fix 7 — Crashes when joining an experience

When Roblox crashes on joining an experience without a message, Roblox lists four causes: Roblox or another program running during an install or update, corrupt temporary files, a firewall blocking Roblox, or other corrupt Roblox files. Work through the fixes in this order:

  1. Restart the PC. Roblox says this alone fixes many Roblox problems.
  2. Clear your browser’s temporary internet files if you launch Roblox from the website.
  3. Allow Roblox through your firewall or antivirus. Security suites often block programs from going online by default.
  4. Reinstall Roblox. Close every other program first. Reinstalling overwrites broken files, so you usually don’t need to uninstall. If it still crashes, uninstall, restart, then reinstall from roblox.com.

Roblox also offers its app in the Microsoft Store and describes that version as more stable, with fewer crashes.

Once Roblox stops crashing

A Roblox client that no longer crashes can still hitch in busy experiences. The Roblox stuttering fix covers power plans, background apps and graphics settings that smooth out frame-time spikes. Frequently asked questions

Why does Roblox keep crashing on my PC?

Most Roblox crashes on Windows come from another program interfering with the Roblox client, which Roblox's anti-cheat treats as a crash. Roblox's own fix for the "incompatible software", "third-party software" and "Roblox was stopped" messages is a Windows clean boot: disable non-Microsoft services and startup apps in msconfig and Task Manager, then restart. Graphics crashes are the second big cause and are fixed by updating the GPU driver.

What does "Roblox has crashed due to incompatible software" mean?

It means Roblox detected a specific program that conflicts with the client, and the message shows that program's file path. Close the program named in the path before you play, or do a Windows clean boot so only essential software runs. If the path points to a cheat, injector or modified Roblox client, uninstall it — Roblox can restrict accounts that use modified clients.

How do I fix "Critical system files are corrupt. Roblox cannot run"?

That message (Roblox calls it boot integrity compromised) appears when Windows is running in debug mode. Press Windows + R, run msconfig, open the Boot tab, click Advanced options, untick Debug, apply, and restart. Roblox runs normally once Windows is out of debug mode.

Does OBS make Roblox crash?

OBS's Game Capture source is known to have issues with Roblox, and Roblox shows a dedicated crash message for it. Record or stream Roblox with a Display Capture (or Window Capture) source in OBS instead. Display Capture records the whole monitor and avoids hooking into the Roblox process.

Should I reinstall Roblox to fix crashing?

Reinstall only after a restart and a clean boot fail. Roblox says reinstalling overwrites any deleted or broken files and usually doesn't need an uninstall first; if it still crashes, uninstall, restart the PC, then reinstall from roblox.com with all other programs closed.
