How to Use Gizmos in Fortnite (Gizmo Wheel + All Gizmos)

On this page

To use a Gizmo in Fortnite, hold your pickaxe button to open the Gizmo Wheel, highlight the Gizmo you want, and release to use it. Gizmos are consumable utility items for Fortnite’s Sprite system. They help you find Sprites, extract them, or farm Sprite Dust. They sit in your pickaxe slot instead of your inventory, and they carry over between matches until the season ends on December 5, 2026.

How to Use Gizmos in Fortnite (Gizmo Wheel + All Gizmos)

How to use a Gizmo (step by step)

  1. Hold the pickaxe slot button. That’s whatever your Harvesting Tool is bound to (check Settings → Keyboard Controls). On controller it’s Y / Triangle by default. A quick tap just pulls out your pickaxe; you have to hold it.
  2. The Gizmo Wheel opens. It shows every Gizmo you own and how many of each you have.
  3. Move your mouse or right stick to highlight the Gizmo you want.
  4. Release the button to use it. One Gizmo is spent from that stack.
  5. Switch back to a weapon with any item slot key. There’s no swap delay.

You’re defenseless while the Gizmo Wheel is open, so don’t open it mid-fight. Use Gizmos after you’ve cleared an area or while you’re rotating behind cover.

All Gizmos in Fortnite Treasure Hunters

The Treasure Hunters mini-season (live since November 1, 2026) has five Gizmos:

GizmoWhat it doesBest use
Lucky LocatorSpawns a buried Sprite Chest with a Sprite you don’t own yetFilling out your collection and Sprite Mastery
Sprite LocatorSpawns a buried Sprite Chest with a random SpriteEarly game, when any Sprite helps
Portable ExtractorExtracts your carried Sprite anywhere, no Extraction Site neededBanking a rare Sprite before a risky fight
Extraction AcceleratorInstantly calls an extraction crate at an Extraction SiteSkipping the wait at a contested site
Golden FireworkLaunches a firework showing your name that rains Sprite DustFarming Sprite Dust for purchases

Older Gizmos like the Cheat Code Locator, Llama Supply Drop and Spicy Taco were part of Chapter 7 Season 4 (Override). Coverage of Treasure Hunters doesn’t list them, so don’t count on them this mini-season.

What Sprites and extraction are

Sprites are collectible companions that give passive abilities, and Gizmos exist to help you find and keep them. You pick a Sprite up in a match, but it only goes into your collection permanently once you extract it. If you’re eliminated while carrying a Sprite you haven’t extracted, it’s lost.

You can extract a Sprite three ways:

  • Extraction Site: call a crate, place your Sprite in it, and survive until it leaves.
  • Portable Extractor: extract from wherever you’re standing.
  • Victory Royale: winning the match banks what you’re carrying.

Every extraction pays out Sprite Dust, which you spend on items such as a daily Portable Extractor. Levelling a Sprite up to Mastered unlocks rewards on the Sprite Mastery track, including more Gizmos.

How to get more Gizmos

SourceWhat you get
Daily QuestsA rotating Gizmo reward. Monday’s quest gives 2 Portable Extractors. Quests reset at 9 AM ET
Treasure ChestsLucky Locators, Sprite Locators and Golden Fireworks are in the week-one Treasure Chest loot pool (rare, and shared with your squad)
Sprite Mastery trackGolden Fireworks, Portable Extractors and Extraction Accelerators as milestone rewards
Sprite DustBuy one Portable Extractor per day at a Sprite Service Station

Gizmos are not floor loot. You won’t find them on the ground or from eliminations, and you can’t trade them with other players.

The same Treasure Chests that drop Gizmos can also drop the very rare free-Item-Shop reward. See how to get the Fortnite Pirate Shop token.

Gizmo tips

  • Use locators early. A Sprite Locator or Lucky Locator right after landing gives you the whole match to extract what you dig up.
  • Save Portable Extractors for rare Sprites. Don’t burn one on a common Sprite you could extract at a site. Use it when you’re holding something rare and the zone is closing.
  • Use the Lucky Locator for Sprite Mastery. It only gives Sprites you’re missing, so it’s the fastest way to complete collection goals before the season ends.
  • Spend everything before December 5. Gizmos expire when the season ends. Leftovers don’t carry into Chapter 8.
  • Keep the game smooth. Holding the pickaxe button and flicking to a Gizmo is a quick input. Frame drops and stutter at that moment make it easy to pick the wrong one or get caught in the wheel. The best Fortnite settings for FPS and the free Tier1Suite app help keep frame times steady and input lag low.

Summary

Hold your pickaxe button to open the Gizmo Wheel, highlight a Gizmo and release to use it. Treasure Hunters has five Gizmos: two locators to find Sprites, two extraction tools to keep them, and the Golden Firework for Sprite Dust. You get them from Daily Quests, Treasure Chests, Sprite Mastery and Sprite Dust. They don’t take an inventory slot, they aren’t lost when you die, and they expire on December 5, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How do you use a Gizmo in Fortnite?

To use a Gizmo in Fortnite, hold the button for your pickaxe slot (the Harvesting Tool bind) to open the Gizmo Wheel, move your mouse or stick to highlight the Gizmo you want, and release the button to use it. Gizmos live in the pickaxe slot, so they never take one of your five weapon or item slots. Each use spends one Gizmo from your stack.

How do you get Gizmos in Fortnite Treasure Hunters?

In the Treasure Hunters mini-season you get Gizmos from Daily Quests (Monday's quest gives two Portable Extractors), from Treasure Chests, from the Sprite Mastery track, and by buying a Portable Extractor once per day with Sprite Dust. Gizmos are not normal floor loot, so you won't find them lying on the ground.

What does the Lucky Locator do in Fortnite?

The Lucky Locator spawns a buried Sprite Chest that contains a Sprite you don't already have in your collection. The Sprite Locator does the same thing but the Sprite inside is random, so it can be a duplicate. Either way you still have to dig up the chest and extract the Sprite to keep it.

Do you lose Gizmos when you die in Fortnite?

No. According to Epic, unused Gizmos are not dropped when you're eliminated and they carry over between matches until the season ends. What you can lose on elimination is any Sprite you're carrying but haven't extracted yet, which is why the Portable Extractor is worth saving for rare Sprites.

When do Fortnite Gizmos expire?

Fortnite Gizmos expire when the season ends. For the Treasure Hunters mini-season that is December 5, 2026, when Chapter 8 begins, so any Gizmos you haven't used by then are gone. The days remaining are shown in the Gizmo Wheel during a match.
