Enshrouded Crashing on PC: Fixes After the 1.0 Update

On this page

Most Enshrouded crashes since the 1.0 update were bugs that Keen Games has already fixed: three hotfixes between 15 and 21 October 2026 fixed random crashes, crashes from certain peripherals, water-simulation crashes, save-migration crashes and crashes when quitting, so the first step is to make sure Steam has installed hotfix 1.0.0.3 or newer. If Enshrouded still crashes on the current version, match what you see in the table below and work only that fix.

Enshrouded Crashing on PC: Fixes After the 1.0 Update

Enshrouded 1.0 was a large update: a new save format, a new “brick” renderer for distant terrain, reworked lighting and a much bigger map. Big updates bring launch bugs, and Keen’s patch notes list many of them by name. That makes most crashes easy to diagnose, because you can check whether yours is already on the fixed list.

Fix 1 — Install the latest hotfix

Keen Games released three Enshrouded hotfixes in the first week after 1.0, and each one fixed crashes, so updating is the single most effective crash fix. Steam normally updates the game automatically. To force it, fully exit Enshrouded, then restart Steam and check the game’s page in your Library for a pending update.

What each hotfix fixed, from Keen’s own changelogs:

HotfixDateCrash fixes
1.0.0.115 Oct 2026Several random crashes; crashes caused by specific peripherals attached to the PC
1.0.0.216 Oct 2026A rare crash during save migration with a corrupted character; factory crashes when placing them; crashes when fast travelling or landing with a glider in worlds with many enemies, survivors or mannequins; crashes browsing or downloading shared adventures; water-simulation crashes; a server crash in fights with a very large number of enemies; a Twitch link server crash; a crash with a completely full backpack; crashes when exiting
1.0.0.321 Oct 2026More water-simulation crashes; crashes when leaving the game; random crashes; a crash when interacting with factories; a crash when unlocking recipes with a recipe filter active; a rare save-migration crash; the endless black screen when loading a multiplayer game

If your crash matches a line in that table and you’re on the hotfix that fixed it, the cause is something else. Carry on with the fixes below.

Fix 2 — Save migration crashes and missing characters

Enshrouded 1.0 converts saves from older versions into a new, smaller format the first time you load them, and Keen Games says it backs up the old save before migrating it. Most save-related problems since 1.0 come from that conversion step.

  • Character or world missing? The character and world selection menus now have separate tabs for local saves and Steam Cloud saves. Keen’s changelog says to check the other tab before assuming anything is lost.
  • A corrupted character won’t appear. Since hotfix 1.0.0.2, a character whose save is corrupted is no longer migrated, because migrating it crashed the game. Keen says a fix that migrates and repairs those characters at the same time is in progress. Don’t delete or overwrite anything while you wait.
  • Missing water in a base. Hotfix 1.0.0.3 repairs bases whose Flame Altar wasn’t placed in the voxel grid, but Keen says that in those cases the base’s water can’t be loaded and has to be re-added.
  • “Save data can’t be overwritten.” Enshrouded 1.0 warns you when it can’t write the world or character save, which Keen says happens when the files are set to read-only in Windows. Right-click the save folder, open Properties, and clear Read-only.

The 1.0 local save folder is C:\Users\<your name>\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default. Steam Cloud saves sync from Steam\userdata\<your Steam ID>\1203620\remote. Each world keeps 10 rolling copies (a new one every 10 minutes or on exit), which Keen’s support site explains how to roll back to. Copy the whole save folder somewhere safe before you edit anything.

Fix 3 — Unplug extra peripherals

Hotfix 1.0.0.1 fixed “crashes caused by specific peripherals attached to the PC”, so if Enshrouded crashes on launch or in menus with extra devices connected, test with only a mouse and keyboard plugged in. Keen didn’t name the devices. Unplug controllers, racing wheels, flight sticks, drawing tablets and USB audio interfaces, then launch the game. If it now starts, reconnect one device at a time to find the one that causes the crash, and include that device’s name in a bug report.

Fix 4 — Black screen on launch or when joining multiplayer

A black screen on the first launch after a game update or a GPU driver install is usually Enshrouded compiling shaders, not a crash. Keen says 1.0 “significantly reduced” that compilation time but that some is unavoidable, and its Steam Deck notes say the first start can sit on a black screen “for a minute or two” while shaders are prepared. Give it two minutes before you close it.

An endless black screen when loading a multiplayer world was a 1.0 bug that hotfix 1.0.0.3 fixed. If it still happens on the current version, Keen’s network troubleshooting article suggests:

  1. Clear Steam’s download cache: Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache.
  2. Flush DNS: press Win + R, type cmd, and run ipconfig /flushdns.
  3. Use a wired connection if you’re on Wi-Fi with packet loss.
  4. Set your Steam profile to public if your peer-to-peer session doesn’t appear to friends, or invite them through the Steam friends list instead.
  5. Hosts: Enshrouded’s default query port is 15637. Enshrouded uses IPv4 only for multiplayer.

If your group plays on a dedicated server, see survival game dedicated server performance. Keen recommends a 6-core / 12-thread CPU and 16 GB of RAM for 4–6 players.

Fix 5 — Verify the files and clean-install the GPU driver

If Enshrouded crashes to the desktop with no message while other games run fine, damaged game files or the graphics driver are the usual causes.

  1. Verify the files. In Steam, right-click Enshrouded → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam re-downloads anything that’s damaged or missing.
  2. Update or clean-install your GPU driver. Use the current driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. If crashes started after a driver update, remove the driver completely with DDU and reinstall it, as described in how to clean install GPU drivers with DDU. Expect a shader-compilation pause on the next launch.
  3. Close overlays and monitoring tools while you test: the Discord overlay, the Steam overlay, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner and RGB software. This rules them out. Keen hasn’t named any of them as a cause.

Fix 6 — Check the requirements, especially VRAM

Keen Games lists 6 GB of VRAM as a requirement even at minimum settings, so a 4 GB graphics card is below spec, and running out of video memory makes games crash or stutter.

MinimumRecommended
OSWindows 10, 64-bitWindows 10, 64-bit
CPUIntel Core i5-6400 / AMD Ryzen 5 1500XIntel i7-8700 / AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
RAM16 GB16 GB
GPUGTX 1060 / RX 580 / Arc A380 (6 GB VRAM required)RTX 2070 Super / RX 6700 XT / Arc A770 (6 GB VRAM required)
Storage60 GB60 GB, SSD recommended

Keen says 1.0 added several ways to save video memory and improved performance on low-end cards. Its 1.0 notes also single out very large player bases with many lights as a load it reworked point-light shadows for. Big bases cost frames and memory in every survival game, as explained in why base building tanks FPS in survival games. If crashes cluster in your base or in busy areas, lower the graphics preset, and see the out of video memory error fix.

If every game crashes, not only Enshrouded, the problem is the PC. Remove any GPU or CPU overclock or undervolt, turn off XMP/EXPO temporarily to test the RAM at stock speed, and check temperatures.

Report the crash to Keen Games

If none of the fixes work, report the crash with your log files, because Keen fixes crashes from these reports. Use Report a Bug in the game’s Escape menu. If the game won’t start, use the form on Keen’s support site (enshrouded.zendesk.com). Attach:

  • The client log: Steam → right-click Enshrouded → Manage → Browse local files → enshrouded.log plus the backup folder, zipped together.
  • DxDiag: press Win + R, run dxdiag, click Save All Information, and attach dxdiag.txt.
  • Your save files from before and after the crash, if the crash involves a world or character.

If it isn’t a crash

  • Low FPS or stutter, not crashes? Start with the best Enshrouded settings for FPS. Hotfix 1.0.0.3 also improved stuttering with V-Sync on AMD graphics cards, so update first if that’s you. If frame rate sinks the longer you play, see why FPS drops after hours of gameplay.
  • Sound gets odd in large halls? In the 1.0.0.1 notes, Keen listed a known reverb issue that appears only when the master volume slider is below 100%. Its workaround is to leave the slider at 100% and lower the volume in Windows instead.

Summary: Update to hotfix 1.0.0.3 or newer first, because most 1.0 crashes are already fixed. Check the local and Steam Cloud save tabs before assuming a character is lost. Test with only a mouse and keyboard connected. Wait out the shader-compile black screen. If it still crashes, verify the files, clean-install the driver, confirm you have 6 GB of VRAM, and send Keen your enshrouded.log.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Enshrouded keep crashing after the 1.0 update?

Most Enshrouded crashes since 1.0 launched on 15 October 2026 were bugs that Keen Games has since fixed in three hotfixes. These covered random crashes, crashes from specific peripherals, water-simulation crashes, crashes when interacting with factories, crashes during save migration and crashes when quitting. Make sure Steam has installed the latest hotfix (1.0.0.3 or newer) before trying anything else. If it still crashes, verify the game files, update your GPU driver and check that your graphics card has at least 6 GB of VRAM.

Why is my Enshrouded character or world missing after 1.0?

Enshrouded 1.0 moved to a new save format and now shows local saves and Steam Cloud saves on separate tabs in the character and world selection menus, so first check the other tab. Keen Games also says that version 1.0.0.2 stopped migrating corrupted character saves, which used to crash the game, and that a fix to migrate and repair those characters is in progress. Existing saves are backed up before they are migrated, so don't delete anything while you wait.

Where is the Enshrouded log file?

In Steam, right-click Enshrouded, choose Manage, then Browse local files. The current log is enshrouded.log in that folder, and earlier logs are in the backup folder next to it. Keen Games asks for both, zipped, plus a dxdiag.txt file when you report a crash.

How do I fix the Enshrouded black screen when joining multiplayer?

An endless black screen when loading a multiplayer game was fixed in hotfix 1.0.0.3 on 21 October 2026, so update the game first. If it still happens, Keen's network troubleshooting steps are to clear the Steam download cache, run ipconfig /flushdns, try a wired connection and set your Steam profile to public so peer-to-peer sessions show up. Enshrouded uses query port 15637 by default.

What are the minimum specs to run Enshrouded without crashing?

Keen Games lists Windows 10 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, and an NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 580 or Intel Arc A380 with 6 GB of VRAM required. An SSD is recommended. A graphics card with less than 6 GB of VRAM is below the minimum, and running out of video memory is a common cause of crashes in any game.
