Warframe Stuttering on PC? How to Fix Stutter and Lag Spikes
By Tier1Settings Published
On this page
Warframe stuttering on PC almost always comes from damaged cache files after an update, the DirectX 12 (Beta) renderer preparing shaders, Texture Memory set higher than your graphics card’s VRAM, or a laggy squad host — and turning on Show FPS tells you which one in under a minute. If the frame time spikes, the cause is on your PC; if only the ping to the session host spikes, it’s the connection. Match your symptom below, then work that section.

Match your stutter to the fix
| What you see | Most likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stutter started right after a Warframe update | Damaged or fragmented cache files | Verify and Optimize the cache |
| Brief hitch the first time an ability, effect or area appears | Shaders being prepared (most noticeable on DirectX 12) | Test DirectX 11 vs DirectX 12 |
| Uneven frame pacing, FPS jumps around | Uncapped framerate, Vertical Sync mismatch | Cap the framerate |
| Stutter in big open areas, textures popping in | Out of video memory | Stay inside your VRAM |
| Rubber-banding and delayed enemies in squads only | Session host connection | Rule out network lag |
How to tell PC stutter from network lag
Open Options → Display and turn on Show FPS. Warframe’s own overlay shows FPS, frame time (total and GPU), RAM usage, VRAM usage and the ping to the session host.
- Frame time spikes when the hitch happens: the stutter is on your PC. Work Fixes 1–5.
- Frame time stays flat but ping jumps: it’s network lag from the session host. Go to Fix 6.
- VRAM usage sits at your card’s limit: go straight to Fix 4.
Fix 1 — Verify and Optimize the cache
Digital Extremes’ support team lists this first for performance and stability problems, and it’s the most likely fix when stutter starts right after an update.
- Close Warframe and open the Warframe launcher.
- Click the gear icon in the upper right.
- Click Verify and wait for it to finish. It compares your installed files with the current version on DE’s content servers and repairs or replaces any damaged ones.
- Click Optimize once Verify completes.
Then update your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel — DE calls the graphics driver the most important step for any performance or stability issue. On a laptop, check the laptop maker’s site first, since some ship drivers tuned for that model. If stutter began right after a driver update, a clean driver install with DDU rules out a bad install.
Fix 2 — Switch between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12
Warframe runs on DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 (Beta), and you choose in the launcher settings (gear icon), not in-game.
- On DirectX 12, players commonly report short hitches the first time an ability, enemy or tileset appears — the shader compilation stutter DirectX 12 games are known for. It fades as the shaders are cached.
- On DirectX 11, that first-time hitching is usually less noticeable, and DirectX 11 is fully supported.
Play the same mission type on each for 15 minutes and keep whichever is smoother. DirectX 12 needs Windows 10 20H2 or Windows 11. If hitching stays bad on both, clearing the shader cache forces a clean rebuild — expect a few rough minutes while it refills.
Fix 3 — Cap the framerate and set Vertical Sync
An uncapped framerate that swings between 100 and 250 FPS feels less smooth than a steady lower number. Warframe has its own limiter under Options → Display:
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical Sync | Off on a G-Sync / FreeSync monitor; On on a fixed-refresh monitor if you see tearing | VSync caps FPS to your refresh rate to prevent tearing |
| Max Framerate | Your refresh rate (e.g. 144 Hz, 165 Hz, 240 Hz) or a lower value your PC holds steadily | A stable cap gives even frame pacing |
| Display Mode | Fullscreen | Lets you pick the refresh rate; Borderless Fullscreen always renders at desktop resolution |
| Optimized Flip-Model | On if you play DirectX 11 in Borderless or Windowed | Improves DirectX 11 performance in those modes; needs a restart, not available on DirectX 12 |
Reduce Frame Latency (also in Display) cuts input latency and uses less VRAM. DE says it has no drawback with Vertical Sync off or on a G-Sync / FreeSync display, but on a fixed-refresh monitor at lower frame rates some frames can arrive early or late, so slow camera pans may look less smooth. If you play on a 60 Hz panel with VSync on and see uneven motion, try it off. It needs a restart.
For how VSync, G-Sync and a framerate cap fit together, see G-Sync, VSync and Reflex setup.
Fix 4 — Stay inside your VRAM
When a graphics card runs out of video memory, textures spill into slower system RAM and the game hitches — usually in large open areas and when lots of effects fire at once. Show FPS displays your VRAM usage, so check it during a busy mission.
If VRAM sits at the limit:
- Set Texture Memory to Medium (or Low on 4 GB cards). This setting controls how much VRAM Warframe can use for textures.
- Lower Shadow Quality and GPU Particles one step each.
- Turn on Reduce Frame Latency — DE notes it needs less VRAM, especially at 4K, ultrawide or HDR.
See how much VRAM you need for gaming for what each card size handles.
Fix 5 — Lower the heaviest settings and close background software
If frame time spikes in heavy fights, lower the settings that cost the most first. Start with the Quality Preset (Low / Medium / High), then fine-tune:
- GPU Particles and Particle System Quality — the biggest cost when a squad spams abilities.
- Volumetric Fog Quality, SSAO Quality and SSGI.
- Upscaling → Method: DLSS 4 on NVIDIA RTX cards, FSR 3.1 on others, at Quality. Upscaling renders at a lower fixed resolution; Dynamic Resolution and the regular Anti-Aliasing options are unavailable while it’s on. See DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS for the trade-offs.
Digital Extremes also flags software that modifies or monitors system, disk or network activity as a common cause of performance problems — often apps that start with Windows without you noticing. Test with a clean boot (DE links Microsoft’s clean-boot guide) and add apps back one at a time. Unplug non-essential USB devices too; DE notes outdated drivers for external hardware such as controllers can cause problems.
Fix 6 — Rule out host and network lag
In a Warframe squad one player acts as the session host. If the host’s connection is weak, everyone can see rubber-banding, enemies freezing and delayed damage even at a high, steady FPS. That isn’t a graphics problem, so no video setting fixes it.
- Compare solo vs squad. If solo play is smooth, the network is the cause.
- Use a wired connection. DE’s network guide recommends Ethernet over Wi-Fi for lower latency and no wireless interference — see Ethernet vs Wi-Fi for gaming.
- Stop other traffic. Pause downloads, uploads and streams on every device on your network.
- Allow Warframe through your firewall. DE asks you to add exceptions for
Launcher.exeandWarframe.x64.exe, and to disable any VPN or proxy while testing. - Restart the modem and router. Power them off for 30 seconds, turn the modem on, wait 30 seconds, then the router.

Check the basics
| Requirement | Warframe minimum (DE) |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 64-bit (DirectX 12 needs Windows 10 20H2 or Windows 11) |
| CPU | Intel Core i7-860 or AMD FX-4170 (must support SSE4.2) |
| RAM | 4 GB |
| GPU | DirectX 11 compatible |
| Storage | 75 GB free |
DE tests that the game runs on the minimum spec, but notes that laptops and apps running in the background affect performance and recommends better hardware for an optimal experience. Installing Warframe on an SSD rather than a hard drive also helps the game load new areas without pauses.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Warframe stutter on my PC?
Warframe stutter usually comes from one of four places: damaged or fragmented cache files after an update, the DirectX 12 (Beta) renderer preparing shaders the first time you see an effect, running out of video memory with Texture Memory set too high, or a laggy session host in a squad, which looks like stutter but is network lag. Turn on Show FPS in the Display settings: if frame time spikes, it is your PC; if only the ping to the session host spikes, it is the connection.
How do I fix Warframe stuttering after an update?
Close the game, open the Warframe launcher, click the gear icon in the top right, click Verify and wait for it to finish, then click Optimize. That is the first step Digital Extremes' own support team lists for performance and stability problems. Then update your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, since DE calls the driver the most important step for any performance issue.
Is DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 better for Warframe stutter?
Test both. Warframe's launcher settings let you switch between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, and Digital Extremes still labels DirectX 12 as Beta. On DirectX 12 some players report brief stutter the first time each effect appears while shaders are prepared; if that bothers you, DirectX 11 is fully supported. DirectX 12 needs Windows 10 20H2 or Windows 11.
What does Reduce Frame Latency do in Warframe?
Reduce Frame Latency, in the Display settings, shortens the time between your input and the frame on screen and uses less video memory. Digital Extremes says it has no drawback with Vertical Sync off or on a G-Sync or FreeSync display, but on a fixed-refresh monitor at lower frame rates some frames can arrive early or late, so slow camera pans may look less smooth. It needs a game restart to take effect.
Why does Warframe lag in squads but not solo?
In a Warframe squad, one player acts as the session host, so if the host has a weak connection everyone can see rubber-banding and delayed enemies even at high FPS. Show FPS displays your ping to the session host. Play solo or host yourself to compare, use a wired Ethernet connection, and stop other downloads and streams on your network, as Digital Extremes' network guide recommends.
